However much you might love him, you’d have to be some sort of superhero yourself not to be suffering with some pretty serious Spidey fatigue by the end of Amazing Spider-Man 2. So the idea of having to endure yet another ‘origin’ movie/reboot for the poor overused web-slinger sounded about as much fun as night down the pub with Ben Affleck's Batman.

It turns out, though, that the latest Spider-Man’s entertaining and energized moments in Captain America: Civil War weren’t just a momentary fluke. Rather they were a pretty apt taster for the full Spidey movie that’s now just arrived - looking lovely - on 4K Blu-ray.
Here we have a film that almost miraculously manages to find new beats and new energy for the Spider-Man character, investing him with a thoroughly modern level of ‘every high school kid’ authenticity while also finding time to pitch him against a proper, well-developed bad guy. All set against a backdrop of beautifully constructed but crucially never over-showy action scenes.
Ghostbusters (2016) - the image really does have at least some of the extra snap, depth and, at times, granularity associated with a genuine 4K experience.Wreaking hammock.
Photo: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony/Columbia PicturesDolby Vision’s extra refinement when it comes to color and light management also helps bring out more detail in the image - especially in skin tones and Spidey’s Stark-made suit.
Actually, Spider-Man: Homecoming is arguably the most compelling demonstration yet of Dolby Vision’s talents. Almost every frame of the Dolby Vision image looks superior to its HDR10 equivalent. Colors look more vivid, more subtly toned and more natural. Peak brightness highlights look strikingly more extreme as noted before, but also, brilliantly, more full of subtle detail and tonal nuance.
More surprisingly, the Dolby Vision image’s black levels look just gorgeous. Rich, deep, full of detail and also, I’m very happy to say, remarkably stable. Yep, while watching the film on LG's OLED65E7 I didn’t once notice any sign of the sudden infusions of greyness into either the image or the black bars above and below it that sometimes crop up with the Power Rangers and Fate Of The Furious Dolby Vision 4K Blu-rays (Fate Of The Furious is reviewed on 4K Blu-ray here).
This appears to prove definitively that the black level instabilities seen in those other two Dolby Vision titles are down to the mastering issues rather than some innate weakness of the Dolby Vision system as delivered by LG’s latest OLED TVs.
While the Dolby Vision master is comfortably superior to the HDR10 one, it does suffer a couple of issues. One is that skin tones occasionally feel a touch orangey in some sequences. Second, Dolby Vision’s extra precision can leave some of the special effects looking a touch more ‘exposed’ during bright scenes than they do on the HDR10 version.
Spidey pulls it together.
Photo: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony/Columbia PicturesIf you’re reading this and you don’t own an LG OLED65E7 or any other Dolby Vision-capable TV, while you’re unquestionably missing out on some picture quality bells and whistles, the good news is that the HDR10 transfer is still very nice indeed.
The HDR still feels impressively consistent in its application considering there’s no scene by scene metadata; still feels a natural part of the picture rather than forced and artificially dialed up; still delivers outstanding black levels; and still makes you never want to watch SDR again.
Perhaps the best way to sum up the difference between the Dolby Vision and HDR10 masters is that the HDR10 one feels a little ‘averaged out’ in terms of its intensity and dynamism versus the Dolby Vision master. Which I guess, if you think about it, is exactly what it is!
Sound Quality
The 4K Blu-ray of Spider-Man: Homecoming gets a Dolby Atmos mix (compatible with Dolby True HD 7.1), while the Blu-ray only gets a DTS HD 5.1 track. For the most part the 4K disc's Atmos track is a really good mix too, despite not being quite as explosively dynamic during action scenes as some other Atmos soundtracks I’ve heard.
Its strength, surprisingly for an action blockbuster, lies mostly in the smaller, finer things. The mix is packed with subtle ambient and positional effects that shift and pan around every Atmos channel (including the height ones), generating a much more effective sense of setting and location scale than most mixes bother trying to achieve.
Standing on the floor is for hipsters.
Photo: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony/Columbia PicturesThese effects are even maintained when the score kicks in big, or when there are dynamic action effects to deliver. In other words, unlike many mixes, it’s not an ‘either/or’ deal, where ramping up the score or action effects is an excuse for forgetting about the subtle ambient stuff.
The only qualification I’d add to this point is that to really appreciate the audio mix, you need to play it loud. Slightly louder, at least, than the usual baseline volume you likely use when watching films through your home cinema system. At ‘regular’ volumes some of the subtle detailing - and a few moments of quiet dialogue - is hard to pick up.
Some might feel that the big action set pieces could have benefited from a bit more impact and brute audio force. But the mix doesn’t sound muffled, and I personally see no harm in stopping short of turning the dynamics - especially bass dynamics - up to 11 if that lets you keep more clarity and detail.
Extra Features
Sony and Marvel have put together a passable rather than great selection of extra features to accompany Spider-Man: Homecoming’s 4K debut.
For once, you even get a few on the 4K disc, rather than everything being saved for the accompanying HD Blu-ray.
The Spidey Study guide is the most substantial of these, delivering pop-up trivia while you’re watching the film concerned with the world of the comics and other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. The pop ups appear with so-so regularity, but much of the trivia is only really of interest to fairly serious comic buffs. So I’d be surprised if many ‘regular Joes’ will stick with the feature right to the bitter end.

Photo: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony/Columbia PicturesAlso on the 4K disc is a photo gallery covering behind the scenes shots, stills, and production artwork. Some of the artwork here really is gorgeous; so much so that it might have been better to have just focused on that and not bothered with the stills from the film (except where they relate to a specific piece of artwork, anyway).
Wrapping up the 4K disc's extras are basic cast and crew head shots, plus a ‘moments’ feature that lets you skip to key scenes featuring Spider-Man, Vulture, Peter and Net, and the MCU.
On the accompanying Blu-ray is more than an hour more of bonus content, briefly introduced by Tom Holland.

Setting the tone nicely for much of this content is a chucklesome two-minute gag reel, followed by 10 deleted and extended scenes. While only one or two of these scenes - such as one that adds an interesting extra beat to The Vulture’s character - feel like they might have helped the film, most of them are either very entertaining/funny in their own right, or fun to watch for their unfinished special effects.
Tangled Web is a six-minute featurette tracking the integration of Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Included here is information on the highly unusual relationship/deal between Sony and Marvel/Disney that made the film possible (given Sony’s ownership of the Spider-Man rights).
Searching For Spider-Man is an 8-minute featurette focusing on the casting of Tom Holland as Spider-Man. This contains tons of behind the scenes and casting footage, and is guaranteed to make you jealous of Holland’s all-round physical abilities.

Aftermath is probably the most skippable feature, as it simply spends five minutes discussing how Homecoming picks up from the end of the last Avengers film and lays some foundations for future ones.
The Vulture Takes Flight gets things back on unmissable track with its six-minute focus on The Vulture - reminding us in the process of just how good an actor Michael Keaton can be.
Jon Watts: Head of Class examines the process of directing a film like Homecoming. It’s less interesting than the features devoted to Spider-Man and The Vulture, but it’s still worth investing six minutes of your life in.
Pros and Cons of Spider-Man provides a quite entertaining three and a half minutes where Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon (‘Ned') sit there chatting about the best and worst things about being Spider-Man.
Rappin’ With Cap, meanwhile, compiles a short series of amusing Captain America safety videos, and marks the end of the stuff you probably want to bother watching. Unless you’re particularly into watching trailers and previews.

A few more extra features (especially a commentary track or two) would have been nice, and you can’t help but wonder just how awesome the picture might have looked if the film had been shot and mastered for the cinema in 4K.
Nonetheless, Spider-Man: Homecoming enjoys some of the most all-round lovely picture quality seen on a 4K Blu-ray to date - especially if you’ve got a TV able to unlock its exquisite Dolby Vision master.
